This is a reproduction of a sawbuck table at the Landis Valley Museum. I tried my best to use only hand tools, but there may have been the occasional slice of a bandsaw blade along the way. The wood is curly cherry, and the finish is shellac and wax. The cool features about this project are sliding, half blind, and through dovetails; tusk tenons; and lamb’s tongue profiles. Your Questions About Woodworking Tools

Paul asks…

I just cleaned out my garage.?

I am a woodworker so I have a lot of woodworking tools along with screws/nails/paint tools/electrical parts.
I’m looking for ideas on how to organize all of it.
Any suggestions.

Denny answers:

Try this

Somehow, I grabbed the wrong picture when I posted. Here’s another picture.

There are a few books out there that will provide ideas for organization. Also try Workbench magazine, good ideas there.

Mark asks…

Question about the Pinewood Derby?

My son just joined Cub Scouts a few months ago. Neither of us have ever heard of the Pinewood Derby until the den gave us a car kit. I have no clue what to do with this thing. I’m a single mom, I don’t have any woodworking tools. What exactly needs to be done with this thing? I don’t want my son to miss out, but heck, I’m not a man and I don’t have any tools. What do you guys suggest a single woman does to help her kid out with something like this??

Denny answers:

Do you have a brother, dad, friend, who can help your son and have some male bonding time here? If not, here you go, Mom, you both learn a few new things.

First of all, the Pinewood is supposed to be a learning, bonding experience for the Scout. It should be more about learning how to use the tools, shape the car, paint it, put the wheels on so it runs straight, and where to put the weights so it runs fast. It’s NOT about whose adult builds the prettiest, fastest car while the child looks on. It’s supposed to be a teaching, sharing experience.

Second, it’s supposed to be fun. It’s not about *My kid’s car won, but I built it* (trust me, you’ll know which boys’ fathers built the cars and which ones were joint efforts), so if there’s a little sawdust around the edges, or messy paint, that’s part of the experience.

Third, you both get to learn how to use a coping saw, some sandpaper, glue, and paint. So you make a mess, nobody cares.

Those car kits are just pine blocks, they can be cut fairly easily with a coping saw (that’s the one that looks like a question mark sort of), and the hardware store can give you pointers on what kind of sandpaper you’ll need (usually a medium and a fine grit). And inexpensive acrylic paint from the department store and a cheap foam brush work very well. The hardware store can give you some pointers on assembling the wheels and putting them on the car too.

Honey, you don’t need to be a man to help your son build his car and learn that losing is just as ok as winning as long as you Do Your Best. If you get really stuck, go to your Cubscout Master for advice and assistance, it’s what he’s there for. Or if you have a Home Depot nearby, they often have clinics to help kids in your son’s situation–no dad or one who hasn’t got a clue, or has no tools–call them and ask.

Oh, yeah, how do I know this stuff? Well, I’m the mother of two Eagle Scouts, who went through the entire Scout Trail, and my grandson is now a Second Class Scout on his way to Eagle. Yes, I had the advantage of having my husband around to help, but none of my boys’ cars were things of beauty, but they had a good time building them. No boy becomes an Eagle without the help of the community behind him, and if you participate as an adult he’s that much more likely to go forward and stay in the program. BTW, my *boys* are now 37 and 32 and both are still active in the Scouting movement as adults. The oldest has stayed on as a Troop Committeeman for his son’s former Cub Pack, and the younger one is the local troops’ Troop Committee Chairman and is the adult leader for the Explorer Post.

Hang in, Mom, you’ll have a ball, there’s nothing like camping with 4,000 boys in the rain in several inches of water for the weekend. Been there, done that, loved it.

Michael asks…

Want to get started making furniture?

I’m 16 and I’m fairly skilled at woodworking at my high school. For christmas I’m thinking of asking for a few tools to get me started in building some furniture, and possibly making a part time business out of it if I can make good enough products. What do you think the BARE ESSENTIALS are for me to get started doing this? Thanks!

Denny answers:

A good table saw is essential and if you can find one with a router table attachment on one of the extensions you can incorporate two tools into one. If not, get a good router/shaper and a table so you can run profiles. Get a good hand held sander, I would suggest a random orbital type because they do not leave any sanding lines regardless of grain direction. Finally, you really cannot do anything serious without a joiner because your table saw will not provide a clean enough cut right from the saw. The nice thing about most of this equipment is that, if you keep your eyes open, you can find it used in the paper and at garage sales. I have been collecting equipment for many years and have accumulated what I need to create some decent furniture. I find absolutely nothing more relaxing than to spend an evening in my shop working on a project and I have never tired of that wonderful smell of fresh cut Oak or Cherry. Every once in awhile I will visit a friend or relative who has a piece of furniture I built several years back and it’s like seeing an old friend. When I think that this furniture will be around, (bearing my signature), long after I am gone from this earth it makes me feel pretty warm inside. I hope you’ll find the same pleasure over time and learn to know and love wood as I do. Best of luck to you.

Your Questions About Carpenter Tools

Ruth asks…

( Tool men or Carpenters ) women too. I spent all my gift money on 1 Item, now I feel guilty?

I am a master carpenter. I have a table saw, now I bought a nice router 185.00 with my Christmas & birthday cash. But I feel guilty cause I really don’t have to have it. it would be something I can make cool things with. also I don’t know how often I’ll use it realistically.
takes time and $ for wood etc. I thought of saving the $ to maybe put it towards a new TV or something more sensible. I couldn’t pass up the deal because it has a $30.00 rebate which makes it a good deal. Ever since I quit drinking 12 years ago, decisions seem a lot harder. I don’t know why.
By master I just meant I am darn good. 35 years
in construction business. and the router was for a toy to make things when I wanted. you don’t need a router to build a house! and who said it was my 1st one? my 1st one is older than some of you clowns that answered rudely, then disappeared. master is a figure of speach. did you ever hear of a master Doctor? no, they are practicing. there is always something to learn from someone, so lighten up. If you need advice or questions I would be happy to help. I know I or no one is a master, because things change all the time. so put that in your pipe and smoke it.
I am disapointed at some of the accusations made towards me and cocky remarks. also happy for the polite answers.

Dusty answers:

I feel guilty about buying stuff for myself too. Think of it this way, you got a good deal and on it and I’m sure you’ll put it to good use. Now if you were just going to let it sit and collect dust, then that is another story. If it is going to put a strain on your budget though, maybe you should take it back and save up for it. If not, then just enjoy it and don’t feel guilty!

Thomas asks…

Are there any flowers that you could give to a man?

Well, people thinks that flowers are for women, that roses are sweet, tulip is cute, etc. I wonder if there’s a flower or a plant that would be good to give to guys on valentine’s day.

Does giving your boyfriend a basket of various tropical fruit would be better than a bouquet of roses?

Does giving your boyfriend a log of pine wood with carpenter‘s tool for valentine’s day would be better than a handful of tulips?

Or perhaps, there are flowers that would be perfect to be given to a man?

Dusty answers:

If a man wanted me to feel fondly toward him, he’d give me carnations.

Richard asks…
